Odd or poignant?
Over twelve years ago our Mother decided to adopt a rescue puppy from a puppy mill that was closed down by the State. The flea ravaged female had been bred and abandoned at the ripe old age of three, alone in a filthy cage, no water etc. Mom recently had to make the very difficult decision to put down her 15 year old 'puppy', Mitsy.
The collar and leash have been on the front landing steps for more than a few days, now. A partially full bowl of food remained on the kitchen floor until I eventually emptied it and stuck the bowl in her dishwasher.
A few days later, I found the bowl once again on the floor where everyone was used to seeing it (and tripping over it), even though it was empty. I put it back in the dishwasher and went to the front door landing and picked up the leash and hung it in the closet with some others.
The next evening the empty bowl was back on the counter.......this time I left it there. She will deal with her loss on her own schedule, not ours.
I offered to walk the other dog and noticed Mitsy’s collar, still on the steps, so I picked it up and moved it to the mantle of the fireplace alongside the ashes of some other favorite pets.................. The other dog, Mr. BoJangles, immediately came running to where I had stood when he heard the jingle of the many tags on her collar. He busily searched the living room floor, then lifting his nose, still searching, he settled on the hearth directly under her collar, no longer interested in a walk.
Was it just me, or did he look sad?
Odd or poignant?
Do they miss us?
Do they miss each other?
What do you think?
